Most painters / drywallers will try to convince you that you need to put some kind of texture back on your ceiling after the popcorn is removed. The intention is to cover up any imperfections in a less obvious manner than the popcorn. I didn't take this suggestion very well. The whole reason I worked so hard removing and sanding that popcorn was so I would end up with a pretty, smooth ceiling!!!!
I am just here to let you know that it can be done. After two rounds of spackling and sanding we were able to paint our ceilings using just a minimal nap on the roller. They look pretty darn good if you ask me. A couple of things to keep in mind if you are going for a smooth finish:
1.) After you are happy with your finished ceiling use a slightly moist floor sponge to "mop" your ceiling to make sure you get any remaining dust off. If any dust remains on the ceiling before you paint it can cause paint failure. Jeremy bought this sponge by Mr. Clean at the Dollar Store and it worked well.
2.) When you are totally done with your ceiling go back and check over the areas that have drywall tape. If you have sanded closely to the tape for a smooth finish you may need to go back and do another thin layer of joint compound over the tape line. If the tape comes into direct contact with the paint, over time the paint will pull the tape away from the ceiling and you will get a crease in your beautiful new ceiling! (We learned this one the hard way)
Finally!! We have popcorn free, recessed light present, beautifully painted ceilings (well in at least 3 rooms) and I couldn't be happier! We might still have walls, floors etc. to go but the ceilings make an immediate impact!
